Popular Australian Racer Continues Family’s Success At Famed Canadian Track br br
BOWMANVILLE, Ont., Canada – Aug 30 #8212;
pVeteran David Brabham battled young star Simon Pagenaud
right down to the wire Saturday to win his 12th career American Le Mans Series pole position in preparation for
Sunday’s Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport at the legendary Mosport International Raceway, just outside of Toronto./p
pBrabham, the recent 24 Hours of Le Mans overall champion, posted a superb one minute, 5.323 second
clocking on his fourth lap of the 20-minute qualifying session on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn circuit and watched the
French youngster take a shot at stealing the pole on his concluding laps. Driving the No. 9 Patroacute;n Highcroft Acura
ARX-02a prototype sports car, Brabham waited until the nine-minute mark of qualifying to actually enter the racing
surface and quickly established the speed to beat with a clocking of 135.517 miles per hour./p
pBrabham, who’ll team with Scott Sharp in Sunday’s two-hour, 45-minute main event, didn’t show his hand
until it counted in qualifications. It was Brabham’s second 2009 pole and 18th of his ALMS career./p
pBrabham, 43, won the LMP2 class with Sharp last year at Mosport, matching his father, Sir Jack’s, 1967
Mosport win when the elder Brabham and former Formula One champion took the Canadian Grand Prix. Brabham’s
older brother, Geoff, finished second at Mosport in a 1981 Can-Am race but never won at the famed track./p
pPagenaud, a three-time pole winner this year, drove his No. 66 XM Radio de Ferran Acura ARX-02a to a
time of one minute, 5.397 seconds, just .074 seconds off Brabham’s pole clocking. Pagenaud, who will co-drive
with Gil de Ferran Sunday, looked to be in position to match or better Brabham’s run, but the 25-year-old Frenchman
just missed on each of his final three laps to settle for second on the grid./p
pAcura’s overall pole was the eighth in eight American Le Mans Series races this year./p
pBrabham and Sharp hold a 13-point advantage in the LMP1 standings entering Sunday’s Mosport race in a
tight contest with the de Ferran Motorsports team. Brabham and Sharp won this year at St. Petersburg and Road
America, while Pagenaud and de Ferran have four victories [Long Beach, Utah, Lime Rock and Mid-Ohio]./p
pIn the LMP2 category, Marino Franchitti won his second pole of the year in the Dyson Racing Mazda, with
Chris Dyson second in a Mazda and Luis Diaz third in the No. 15 Lowe’s Fernandez Acura ARX-01b./p
pstrongACURA QUOTES:br
DAVID BRABHAM (#9 Patroacute;n Highcroft Racing Acura ARX-02a):/strong “We were a little behind with our car at the
beginning of the weekend. We have improved the Acura’s handling and we felt confident for qualifying. Winning
pole here is always a thrill. My dad and my brother have done well here before, so I am pleased to take pole. The
track surface is not as good due to the rain this morning. This place is tough on a driver. Turns Two and Eight are
hard for you. It is quite a ride at this track. It is an old-school circuit.”br
strongSIMON PAGENAUD (#66 XM Radio de Ferran Acura ARX-02a):/strong “I tried very hard to take a run at David’s time
today. We are very close with the Acura cars and it gets to be a shootout. I had a little traffic on my fastest lap that
might have made a difference in winning the pole. But,
overall, we want to be ready for the race.”br
strongLUIS DIAZ (#15 Lowe’s Fernandez Acura ARX-01b):/strong”This place is just flat out all of the time. There are really
only four corners where you brake. And our straight-line
speed is not as fast as the Mazdas. The car feels very
good and it will be good in the race. But for qualifying,
we just couldn’t stay with them. I feel good about our
chances for the race.”/p

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, 29 August 2009, 6pm Eastern… For decades, BMW has made the reduction of emissions and fuel consumption a key part of its product development strategy, just as enhancements to the dynamic ability of each BMW have been a lasting, sustained brand value. BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy – the pursuit of an enhanced, athletic driving experience while simultaneously lowering the consumption and emissions of each vehicle – resulted in the most dramatic drop in fleet consumption of any automaker from 1990 through 2005, according to an Environmental Defense study.

pstrongSAFETY OVERVIEW/strong/p
pThe RL is equipped with a comprehensive array of the latest technologies to enhance active safety (collision avoidance) and passive safety (crash safety performance). Features like Vehicle Stability Assisttrade; (VSAreg;) with traction control, heightened handling agility, and ABS enhance collision avoidance capability in the RL. Should a collision prove unavoidable, the Advanced Compatibility Engineeringtrade; (ACEtrade;) body structure of the RL enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. Inside the RL, side curtain and dual-stage front airbag systems work together with sophisticated restraint systems to minimize the likelihood of injury to passengers in sufficient impacts. In addition, the RL has standard features that help improve safety such as an Active Front Lighting System./p

pstrongAVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY PACKAGES/strong/p
pFor 2010, Acura offers two available Technology Packages on the RL:/p
ul
listrongRL with Technology Package:/strong Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognitiontrade;, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Reroutingtrade;, AcuraLink Real-Time Weathertrade;, rear view camera, Active Front Lighting System (AFS), ventilated front seats, and a wood/leather steering wheel and shift knob.br
/li
listrongRL with Technology Package plus CMBStrade;:/strong in addition to the Technology Package features, the “plus CMBStrade;” model includes Acura’s Collision Mitigation Braking Systemtrade; (CMBStrade;), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and genuine wood instrument panel trim./li
/ul
pstrongCOLLISION MITIGATION BRAKING SYSTEMtrade; (CMBStrade;)/strong/p
pIn 2006, the RL was the first Acura vehicle to offer an available Collision Mitigation Braking Systemtrade; (CMBStrade;). This revolutionary safety technology monitors potential rear-end collisions, uses audio, visual and tactile signals to alert drivers to the risk of collision, assists brake operation and pre-tensions the front seatbelts to help reduce impact force on occupants and vehicle damage should a collision become unavoidable. Unlike pre-collision systems on competitive vehicles, CMBStrade; can automatically apply the brakes to help mitigate the severity of a collision./p
pUsing a millimeter-wave radar unit located inside the front grille, the CMBStrade; system monitors the distance between the RL and the car directly in front of it (up to a distance of 300 feet) along with the rate of closure between the two vehicles. If the closing rate increases to a point where a collision is likely to occur (based on relative vehicle speeds and following distance), the CMBStrade; system uses visual and audible warnings to prompt the driver to take preventative action. Based on the driver’s response, if the CMBStrade; system determines that the likelihood of a collision has decreased to an acceptable level, the system will disengage. If the driver’s response does not sufficiently reduce the risk of a collision, the CMBStrade; system will issue a secondary warning consisting of audible, visual and tactile elements as well as light braking to alert the driver to take action. If the closing rate increases so much that a collision becomes unavoidable, CMBStrade; can initiate hard braking to reduce the vehicle’s speed as well as pre-tension the driver and front passenger seatbelts to help reduce the severity of the crash. Depending on the speed of closure between the vehicles, CMBS may initiate hard braking without providing any prior warning./p
pstrongTIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEMtrade; (TPMStrade;)/strong/p
pAn onboard Tire Pressure Monitoring Systemtrade; (TPMStrade;) with location and pressure indicators warns the RL driver if the air pressure in any tire becomes significantly low. This information helps reduce the chance of losing control of the vehicle due to low tire pressure. This is important because a slow leak might not be detectable immediately, but over time could cause significant air loss, reduced traction and potentially a blowout./p
pA sensor mounted on each wheel continually monitors tire pressure and sends a coded signal to an initiator located on the chassis. The information is then sent to an electronic control unit that compares the pressure values of each tire against an acceptable set of values./p
pWhen a tire’s pressure drops significantly below the proper specification, a “CHECK TIRE PRESSURE” alert appears on the MID alert screen. The system can simultaneously display the air pressure in all four tires via the MID, making it simple to locate the tire with low pressure. If there is a fault in the system, a “CHECK TPMS SYSTEM” alert appears. At the driver’s preference, the display can continually show the air pressure in all four tires. Regardless whether the driver chooses to monitor tire pressure via the MID, a warning will occur if a tire’s pressure drops significantly below specification./p
pstrongADVANCED COMPATIBILITY ENGINEERINGtrade; (ACEtrade;)/strong/p
pThe Advanced Compatibility Engineeringtrade; (ACEtrade;) body structure on the 2010 Acura RL is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACEtrade; design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. These incidents may include a frontal collision between vehicles of differing heights, weights, dissimilar frame construction design or differing bumper height./p
pDuring a frontal collision, a conventional body structure generally concentrates the loads from the impact along two pathways running longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame. The ACEtrade; structure is designed to help prevent cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple load bearing pathwaysmdash; and away from the passenger compartment./p
pstrongCRASH TESTING/strong/p
pThe RL has received the highest ratings given (5-Stars) by NHTSA in frontal and side crash safety testing as well as rollover resistance./p
ul
liIn the 35 mph NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) full frontal crash test, the RL earned a 5-Star crash safety ratingmdash; the highest rating mdash; for both driver and front passenger/li
liIn the 38.5 mph side impact crash test, the RL earned a 5-Stars crash safety ratingmdash; the highest rating mdash;for both front and outboard rear passengers/li
/ul
p*Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov). Model tested with standard side-impact air bags (SABs)./p
pstrongDRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER DUAL-STAGE, MULTIPLE-THRESHOLD AIRBAG SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)/strong/p
pFront airbags for the driver and front passenger are designed to provide protection for the head and chest during a moderate to severe front collision, while simultaneously helping to reduce the likelihood of injury. The airbags do both through the use of a dual-stage, multiple-threshold airbag technology. One or both of these airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seatbelt usage and other factors./p
pFrontal airbags are designed to supplement the seatbelts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes./p
pIn the RL, the system also assesses the weight of the front passenger through a seat-mounted weight sensor. If the detected weight is less than a certain amount, the front passenger airbag is turned off. The front passenger airbag also features a seamless instrument panel cover over the airbag for a cleaner, more elegant look./p
pstrongDRIVER’S AND FRONT PASSENGER’S SIDE AIRBAGS WITH FRONT PASSENGER OCCUPANT POSITION DETECTION SYSTEM (OPDS)/strong/p
pSide airbags are mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback. The airbags are designed to provide upper torso protection in the event of a sufficient side impact. The front passenger seat is equipped with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), an innovative system designed to deactivate the side airbag if a small child (or small-stature adult) leans into the side airbag deployment path. When the passenger returns to an upright seating position, the side airbag reactivates so it can deploy and help protect the occupant in a side impact. The system utilizes sensors in the passenger seatback to determine the height and position of the occupant, and to determine if it is safe to deploy the side airbag./p
pstrongSIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS/strong/p
pIn a sufficient side impact, the RL’s side curtain airbags deploy from roof modules, providing head protection for the front seat and outboard rear seat occupants on the affected side. Side curtain airbags effectively cover the window area from the A-pillar back to the C-pillar. Tests show that the collision impact g-forces acting upon an occupant’s head are far lower with the use of a side curtain airbag./p
pstrongLATCH (LOWER ANCHORS AND TETHERS FOR CHILDREN)/strong/p
pThe RL includes as standard a LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child-seat mounting system for the outboard rear seats. LATCH features built-in lower anchors and ready-to-use upper tether attachment points that allow compatible child safety seats to be installed without using the vehicle’s seat belt system. The LATCH system simplifies child seat installation when an owner installs a LATCH-compatible child seat. The center rear seat has an upper tether point, but no lower anchors./p
pstrongPEDESTRIAN INJURY MITIGATION/strong/p
pAcura’s safety interests extend beyond care for vehicle occupants. The RL hood area is specially designed to deform if contact is made with a pedestrian. Underneath the hood are energy-absorbing supports and fender mounts, and the windshield wiper pivots are also deformable in the event that a pedestrian contacts these areas. Research shows that features such as these dramatically improve a pedestrian’s chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle./p
